The plot of La Parranda, as trivial as that of so many other zarzuelas of the first decades of the 20th century, is about the love between Aurora and Miguel, entrapped by a suitor with a secret that he uses to blackmail the couple, which is resolved with an outlandish yet happy ending. A simple story that exalts the beauty of Murcia’s landscape, the nobility of its people and the deep roots of its traditions, and which is elevated by the brilliant musical inspiration of the score, one of the best, most famous and applauded of the composer from Granada.
The music of La Parranda is direct, catchy and provides great occasions for the singers to shine. It consolidated Alonso’s prestige, which had soared three years earlier with La Calesera. The most noteworthy of its numerous popular pieces is the ‘Canto a Murcia’, which soon became the region’s unofficial hymn.
